There are dozens of new features to dive into and learn, including some that can only be unearthed by unlocking the developer options. Not everyone has access to the new software, however, as Android is well-known for its fragmented update cycles. For now, only users of the Google Pixel and Essential Phone should expect an over-the-air download. In Android Pie, you can rotate an app window without awkwardly pulling down the notification shade and searching for the quick setting toggle.
Tap it to turn your app horizontal, and then switch the other way and tap the same icon to rotate it back to vertical. You can learn more about how the Adaptive Battery Feature works in an interview with the folks who built it at Ars Technica. Android notifications can get overwhelming, especially as those icons clog the status bar and increase in number throughout the day.
A handy new ability in Android 9 makes a note of the notifications you immediately dismiss and then asks if you want to stop the madness. I use this feature with my Nest app to cut down on the number of notifications I receive throughout the day. I no longer see general alerts, like when the front door unlocks or if the cameras sense motion. You can do the same for any app you have installed on your device.
But once you experience the usefulness of the new method, you might not want to go back to the old three-button way. Swipe up from there to see recent apps, and then swipe up again for the app drawer.
Alternatively, you can swipe left on the navigation bar to sift through apps, or swipe up in one quick motion to quick-draw the app drawer. Once activated from inside the Settings panel, Digital Wellbeing continuously aggregates data about your usage habits, including how frequently you use different apps, how many notifications you receive throughout the day, and how often you check your phone.
The results can be harrowing. To unpin an app, touch and hold the back and home buttons. Need to share images or text between apps? Press and hold on the area you want to copy or perform an action with and the interface will respond accordingly.
Android Police has a great primer on how it works. Android Pie no longer defaults to the ringer when you press the volume rocker up or down. You can also prevent ringing in quiet environments by pressing the volume up and power buttons at the same time—no need to unlock the screen whatsoever.
Menu screens now slide up from the bottom of the screen and have a bit of a bounce effect as they transition in and out. Note that this will turn off animations in some other apps, too.
Android Pie offers a setting called Lockdown, which effectively locks up your phone so that only a PIN or a pattern will reveal the Home screen. Seasoned Android users know that if you dig deep into the Developer options within the settings panel, you can find some real gems. Under Settings, tap on System, About phone, and then tap on the Build Number at the bottom of the screen seven times.
A new Developer options setting will appear in the Settings panel. Tap the option to unearth a whole new list of features. Not every feature is meant to be used for day-to-day operation, as Google explicitly labels them as experimental features.

Though it is a very simple thing to do and has improved a little bit in recent years, but now Google has creatively brought huge improvements to it through Android Pie. And in this tutorial below we will show you few different features of App Switcher in Android Pie to make things easier for you. Android Pie does not require to tap the Recents button, just swipe your finger up from the bottom and app switcher will be opened.
You can now see the recent apps in a new UI.
You can view all the apps by scrolling right and left and if you need to open any app either slide it down or tap on it. If you have opened the App Switcher in Android Pie randomly and now you want to immediately exit then you can do this by swiping your finger down from the dock that is the shaded space closer to the bottom and you can also tap on the back button that is mostly found at the left side of the phone.
The most advanced feature in App Switcher in Android Pie is that you can copy the text to the other app and share it if you want. Open the app switcher and hold a small part of the text you want to copy and then select the text by precisely dragging the handles on both sides. Now the quick buttons will appear in front of you and you can choose them to copy or share your text with another app.
Now we will talk about the last yet an important feature of the app switcher that is to clear the apps. Tap it and all the recent apps will be gone. Notify me of follow-up comments by email.

There's the new gesture controls, which are okay, but then there are things like a left-justified clock and the fact that the recent apps menu now scrolls horizontally instead of vertically. Luckily, Samsung has given us a way to bring back the classic Android style. Horizontal recent apps may look pretty, but they're less functional. When this menu was vertical, you could clearly see the last five or so apps you used, making it easy to switch back to one.
But since phones are taller than they are wide, making this menu scroll horizontally means you can only see one or two of your recent apps at a time. With the help of one of Samsung's best apps, though, you can now put things back to the way they were. This method does not work on other devices. To get started, head to the Galaxy Store you'll find this app in your app drawerthen search for "Good Lock" and install it.
This is Samsung's own app, and it's really useful for modifying all the little things on your Galaxy. Once you get it installed, check your app drawer. Make sure you got the version that's called "Good Lock " instead of "Good Lock If you got the version of Good Lock, the update likely hasn't rolled out to you yet. You can try sideloading the version from the link below, but some users have reported this doesn't work, so you may just have to wait a few weeks to try this.
Alternatively, you can try a third-party app called NiceLock. It works as a Good Lock replacement for devices and regions where Samsung hasn't rolled out Good Lock With the version of Good Lock installed, the rest is pretty simple. Open Good Lock from your app drawer, then tap the "Task Changer" plugin placeholder. You'll be taken to the Task Changer plugin's installation page, so tap "Install.
Tap the toggle next to "Not in use" to turn it on, then select "Layout Type. Now, your recent apps menu will be vertically-oriented again. There's even a smooth animation as the tiles fade in and out of view, and a bounce effect when you over-scroll. You can swipe vertically to see more apps though you can already see five apps at a time on most Galaxy phonesand you can swipe left or right to remove an app from the list.

Don't like horizontal recents, or their gestures. Apparently since March of this year Samsung decided they didn't like people changing any of the new features on Android v.Some of the changes have been polarizing, such as the new horizontal recent apps overview.
Some people deem the new recent apps switching UI a regression and harder to navigate. All you need to do is download an older version of the OnePlus Launcher and replace the current version you have on your device with it.
Just be sure to set it as your default launcher. The app switcher code is now built into the launcher, so switching back to an older build of the system launcher means that the system is no longer able to draw its recents menu from the OnePlus Launcher. As a result, it falls back to the system in-built one that we all know and love from Android Oreo.

Android 9 Pie: everything you need to know
Subscribe to XDA. Android 10 internal beta leaks for the Nokia 8 Sirocco and Nokia 5.With the introduction of gesture navigation in Android PieGoogle revamped the recent apps overview screen. Both options were flawed, unfortunately, because any such modification would be OEM-specific and would easily break with any given update. It would be a nightmare for a developer to maintain a recent apps switcher mod for more than a handful of devices.
Android Pie should make that kind of customization a reality. The Pixel Launcher is the pre-installed launcher on the Google Pixel and Google Pixel 2so it just happens to be responsible for handling the recent apps overview on those smartphones.
Now that the source code for the updated AOSP Launcher is available, we can see exactly how the new recent apps interface integrates with the launcher. The developers of Lawnchair launchera popular Pixel Launcher alternative, integrated the code for handling the recent apps into their app. They then figured out the steps needed to get their launcher to be recognized as the default handler for the recent apps overview.
That made it possible to use Lawnchair and not the Pixel Launcher as the default launcher on the Pixel 2 without losing the horizontal app switcher or swipe-up app drawer. We demonstrated this in the following video recorded on the Google Pixel 2 XL running a stock, rooted build Android 9 Pie.
How did the Lawnchair team do it? Well, I was asked not to share how they did it just yet, but getting the app the right permissions to be recognized by the system was surprisingly simple. The next step is to customize it like OnePlus did on the OnePlus 6. Want more posts like this delivered to your inbox?

Then, tap on Swipe on Home Button and toggle the feature on. The icons will then switch from three-button navigation to a pill-shaped icon. To turn off gesture navigation, follow the same steps to toggle the feature off.
